What's God Like?

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Phillip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father…” –John 14:9 ESV

How do you picture God? Most people see God through the eyes of their upbringing. Whether we grew up in a loving and forgiving home, or one where we couldn’t do anything right, we carry those feelings over to our Heavenly Father. Who is God, what’s He like, can we really know? What does scripture say?God is a spirit; and He’s not limited to body, shape, force, or boundaries. He can be everywhere at the same time; and He has unlimited wisdom, power, love, and mercy. He’s a person; and He can feel, think, love, and forgive. He’s not bound by a body, but He is a person. He is perfect in every way. He is holy and totally righteous. He is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. He is love. His holiness demands that all sin be punished, so His love provided our redemption through Jesus Christ on the Cross. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 NIV). God is nothing like our earthly fathers, but He’s a perfect Father of mercy and grace. John 14:9 says it all—if you’ve seen Jesus, you’ve seen the Father. Get to know Him today.

prayer focuses

Father, keep me from thinking that You are like man. You are holy, righteous, perfect, and full of mercy and grace.

Thank You, Father, for adopting me as Your child. Thank You for sending Jesus to redeem me. Thank You, Father, for loving me.
