Spiritual Fruit: Kindness

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. –Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

My husband and I found ourselves in tough times as the economy caused him to lose his job. With two small children, it was indeed frightening. There was a woman in our church who was very stern, and she kept to herself most of the time. One day, as I literally sat in my closet praying, this woman showed up at our front door. She cut to the chase and informed me that she was told in prayer to help us. I, of course, pretended that everything was just fine. She told me to lose the pride and help her get something out of her vehicle. Her car, including the trunk, was filled with groceries; I had never seen so much food. After we put everything away, she announced that she was taking us all out to dinner. Only God knew about our struggle. At dinner, I discovered that she was an amazing, godly woman with a big heart, just very reserved. I thanked her profusely for her incredible kindness. On that day, this woman displayed the fruit of the Spirit of kindness. Her actions spoke louder than words ever could. Jesus said, in Matthew 25:40, that what we do for others, we do for Him.

prayer focuses

Father, help me to be kind in my thoughts, words, and deeds.

Lord, give me spiritual eyes to see where kindness is needed and the strength to act on that need.
