Rejected But Not Forgotten

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. –Psalm 34:18 NIV

One of the deepest hurts is caused by the rejection of those who should love us the most. In I Samuel 16, we learn that Samuel was sent to David’s father, Jesse, to tell him God wanted one of his sons to be anointed the new king. David might have experienced quite a rejection from his own father if he found out that his name was not even mentioned. After the first seven sons were presented, Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen these” (1 Samuel 16:10 KJV). Samuel had to ask if there were any more sons. In response, Jesse didn’t even call his youngest boy by name. He merely replied, “There is still the youngest…He is tending the sheep” (1 Samuel 16:11 NIV). As David was alone in the fields, caring for the sheep, the boy encountered a bear and a lion, and was able to slay both in order to save the lambs. This young lonely shepherd had no idea that God was preparing him to face and subdue Goliath, a foul-mouthed, demonic giant of a man that wanted to destroy God’s people and make them slaves. This accomplishment led to David’s eventual position as King of Israel. What is the Lord preparing you for in your rejections? Stand up to the giants in this world, not fearing their hurtful words and taunts. You are a warrior, not a wimp. You have been anointed. You are a son or daughter of the Most High King!
