Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. –Psalm 139:23-24 NIV

What a powerful statement David made in Psalm 139. He asked God to know his heart and mind—to search for any offensive ways within him. Hidden in many people’s hearts are deep wounds that can cloud our choices, judgments, and reactions. Our wounds become entwined into our daily living and relationships. Wounds from our past can sit heavy on our hearts as a dragnet clogging up who we truly are.Considering these two verses in Psalm 139, when we have a willing heart or ask God to search our hearts—that is when God can heal. God uses hard situations and uncomfortable feelings to release our wounds one by one. Many times we can miss the underlying reason for our choices and actions. That’s why we need to always examine our present situation and ask God to show us His truth. For example, when we become angry with someone, not only do we hurt someone else, but our hearts are wounded as well. God will use the lingering feeling of anxiousness in our hearts to bring us to the place of repentance and forgiveness. Then we can choose to follow His leading, and God will clear our offense so we can go on our way everlasting.
